“Take off your rose colored glasses: Critiquing your work and Understanding the jurying process” with Maya Schonenberger
This is a half day workshop 9 am – 12 pm (morning of our AQU meeting) Maya is known to many of us as a juror in our quilt show and the workshop that she taught us a few years ago. She is a well known studio artist who has been published and juried into numerous shows herself, including such prestigious shows as Quilt National. Her insight into the jurying process should be useful information for all of us who strive to better critique our own work and have a better understanding of what jurors may be looking for when they view our work.
Working in small group sessions participants will explore techniques to evaluate their work. Methods of positive critiquing and choosing exhibition venues for your art style will be discussed. Guidelines will be developed to evaluate the progress of your pieces. Finally the new tools you have learned will be used in a judging exercise during the workshop.
At the end of the workshop participants will have the tools to assess their art with confidence and critiquing your work will now be a positive experience.
Supply List: Pen and notebook is all that is needed.
Class registration is open to AQU members for $25.00. If there is space available, we will open it to non-members in December for $ 35.00.

“Structure and Variations: Black Fabric Sketch” with Cynthia Corbin
Cynthia will be teaching a way to compose directly and spontaneously, as well as to see clearly the structure of a composition. Think of it as sketching with your rotary cutter. This becomes your pattern for a series of studies and variations as well as a visual aid to composition. The emphasis is on variations. Each student will compose a minimum of two black fabric sketches. These will be the basis for a series of studies, carrying each composition through systematic variations and exploring a wide variety of fabrics from solids hand dyed/painted to commercially printed fabrics. Studies will be based on explorations of value relationships, pattern scale relationships, color, adding complexity in field and form and construction techniques.
Cynthia is an excellent teacher who has a problem solving, seat of the pants approach to quilt construction. As an artist, she has devoted herself to extensive study to deepen her understanding of the process that drives her work. As a teacher she encourages her students in their search for uniqueness and authenticity drawing on her passion for developing each student’s individual voice.
Registration is OPEN to AQU members for $145 for the 3 day workshop. If space is available we will open it up to non-members in January for $190.

Kerr Grabowski – “Spontaneous Screen Printing : Combining Textile Paint with Fugitive Media”
10 – 4 Art Alliance of Fort Myers
Kerr is a fiber artist who teaches all aspects of surface design internationally. Her love of color, mark-making and spontaneity is evident in her work. With deconstructed screen printing, a monoprinting technique allows for a freer, more painterly approach on screen printing.
This is a wonderful opportunity to get valuable information on different techniques to those of us who do surface design or who would like to give it a try.
Registration is now open to AQU members. The cost is $155 and a $20 lab fee paid to the teacher for her supplies. A $50 deposit will hold your spot now. If we have any openings, we will open the workshop to non-members in January. If you have any questions, contact Linda Bachman - lrcb@rochester.rr.com or 585-721-2090
